Several days have passed since I read “Stray Mobile” and I am still searching for the perfect word to describe it. Super cute. Miserable. Reading this story consumes a sad narrative regarding humanity while also encouraging you to waste entire afternoons behaving like a foolish cat that walks across freshly painted walls leaving little footprints, sleeps in cozy corners etc that does not relate to the game at all. This contrast held me engaged from the beginning of the game till the end, and its themes lingered with me through several days.
The protagonist is an orange, nameless cat who wants nothing more than to return home after he made an unfortunate leap into a sewer system located beneath a crumbling cybercity. It is known as the Dead City by androids who pass along neon-lit streets where they coexist with what appears to be human-made objects. To obtain additional information about what happened here, you are assisted by B-12 which is a small drone able to connect itself via harnesses or hack terminals in addition linking into language spoken between robots living within city before finally unearthing “memories”.
Before you ask, yes, when initially put into the harness there is this moment where he stops and falls down – just like how any regular cat would do so too. Developers spent countless hours trying to encapsulate all of the cuteness and chaos associated with felines in gameplay mechanics of this game. At times playing “Stray” felt like being inside one of those dreams that ideally should be experienced in 4D: there’s even a dedicated “meow” button; pressing it made my orange Cheeto jump up beside me whenever I played (plus sometimes she would meow spontaneously – just like real cats do).
